  • Gina Soden - Art in Ruins

    03/04/2019 Duración: 25min

Gina Soden is a fine art photographer with a fascination for derelict architecture. She travels around the world seeking decayed and abandoned buildings which become the subjects of her beautiful images. Once loved ball rooms, halls, country houses which have been vacant for decades are her favourite subject matters. Her images show how nature has often grown into the empty spaces on one hand breathing new life into the structures and at the same time drawing attention to the past. The structures she chooses are often highly decorated with frescoes, gilding and carving. The mind is always drawn to how these spaces would have been used in their hey day. Despite the love shown at the construction the buildings are now boarded up or sealed. Soden considers the research that goes into the choosing the locations, as part of the process for her work. • Venice Biennale

    12/02/2019 Duración: 16min

Ever wondered how to take part in the Venice Biennale ? This episode goes behind the scenes at the Venice Biennale, which is comprised of 3 layers. The National pavilions show work that represents each country that is taking part. The collateral events are exhibitions that have a more independent status, and often by groups or institutions, these can take place at the Giardini or the Arsenale, or they can be in the historic centre of Venice. Finally there is the fringe events, these are independent shows by artists or groups which run alongside the main event. Usually these projects do not use the official Bienniale badge or branding but they take place at the same time and across different sites. We talk about the history of the biennial and its impact on the art market. There is a phrase we hear a lot in the art world " see in Venice, buy in Basel" and we discuss what this means, how showing at the Venice Biennale can raise an artists' profile and their market value. • Carrie Brummer

    07/02/2019 Duración: 19min

Carrie Brummer talks about her current project which was inspired by a visit to the US National Archives. While living in the Middle East, Carrie formed an online community called Artists Strong, to stay in touch with more artists. The US National Archives revealed images of women in the 1940s who had taken jobs that were traditionally taken up by men, however with the men away at war, the women took up the jobs. Curiously the photographs provided no further information such as names of the sitters. It was the absence of this information that Carrie was drawn to, and her art work now celebrates these women. Her art uses a range of crafting skills which she says were also traditionally associated with women. In this episode she talks about working towards an exhibition in Ottawa. • Creative Collaboration - Richard Watkins

    15/01/2019 Duración: 25min

Rich and I met in 2014 and I invited him on the podcast to talk about collaboration and what it truly means for artists to use this as part of their creative practice. We discuss how it differs from participation, and he says a true collaboration is one where all parties involved are bringing something to the table and each person is growing their own practice. It is not about having an idea and then bringing people on board to help you fulfil it, that would be a straightforward project. Collaboration by contrast is approaching the conversation with an openness to how the project could be, and then to successfully fulfil it, having parameters in place particularly around the time frame and outcomes. • Michael Petry talks about The Word is Art and what Brexit means for the Arts

    31/12/2018 Duración: 38min

Michael Petry is the guest on this episode of the podcast. He talks about his new book The Word is Art published by Thames and Hudson in 2018. Alongside each of his books, Michael produces an exhibition and in this episode he discusses the issues he is facing given the current situation with Brexit in the UK. The political negotiations around Brexit appear to have excluded the creative industries much to Michael's frustration and he talks about the hold up of his own project as well as his peers. He explains how arts institutions on mainland Europe are unable to commit to exhibitions and projects due to the uncertainty caused by Brexit discussions. The conversation then turns to language; language that is visual, written, spoken and with cultural context. The book covers 200 artists working across 60 languages and we discussed issues around putting the book together and in particular issues around translating art work and ideas. • The Jaunt with Jeroen Smeets

    12/12/2018 Duración: 21min

The Jaunt is a project that lets artists pre sell art work to fund a trip - or go on a jaunt- where they can be inspired by their new surroundings to create art work. It is a simple concept of art patronage that allows the artist to explore new creative territory, and patrons to be a part of that journey. Art buyers purchase work that will be produced as a result of the Jaunt. The art work they will receive is sold sight unseen - because it has yet to be made. The project came about after seeing successful crowdfunding projects and talking to artists about travel and inspiring trips. I loved his ‘ how can we make it happen’ attitude. The Jaunt came about in 2013 and now funds 10 trips a year for artists who Jeroen chooses based on art work he would like to own. The artists he selects are a combination of new and established. The accessible price point of the artworks on sale ahead of an artists Jaunt has likely created a new wave of art patrons who can feel included in the creative process. See more at The Cu
