However, the church fathers' most quoted passage of Scripture (in the writings from the church fathers that have survived) comes from Matthew 5:44. Why does "anything more than this" come from evil? One reason is that swearing oaths can be a form of verbal manipulation. By swearing upon something, rather than simply saying we will or will not do it, we are short-circuiting the other person's discernment and decision making process. This simple teaching from Jesus is a timely reminder for us to practice honesty and humility in the midst of another toxic and argumentative election cycle.

In fact, in the New Testament this became the main way to address fellow Christ followers. Viewing one another primarily through the lens of siblings offers us a path forward into healthy relationship. In our hyper-sexualized culture, we so desperately need an alternative path forward out of systems of lust. Jesus offers us this path.
