Why does "anything more than this" come from evil? One reason is that swearing oaths can be a form of verbal manipulation. By swearing upon something, rather than simply saying we will or will not do it, we are short-circuiting the other person's discernment and decision making process. This simple teaching from Jesus is a timely reminder for us to practice honesty and humility in the midst of another toxic and argumentative election cycle.
