Sinopsis
We are seeing an ever-increasing burden of chronic disease, primarily driven by our food and food system. This is perpetuated by agricultural, food and health care policies that dont support health. We need to rethink disease and reimagine a food system and a health care system the protects health, unburdens the economy from the weight of obesity and chronic disease, protects the environment, helps reverse climate change and creates a nation of healthy children and citizens. This podcast is a place for deep conversations about the critical issues of our time in the space of health, wellness, food and politics. New episodes are released every Wednesday morning. 07/05/2021 Duración: 15minHow Addictive Foods Are Driving Fatty Liver Disease | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (or fatty liver, for short) affects 90 million Americans and is a major cause of chronic disease and inflammation in the body. This inflammation creates insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, which causes your body to deposit fat not just in your liver but also all around your organs and in your belly. So what is driving fatty liver and the whole cascade of issues it causes? And how do you fix it? In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Shawn Stevenson and Dr. Shebani Sethi Dalai about the various mechanisms that are at work when our bodies process food. They also discuss how non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is on the rise in our country due to the overconsumption of sugar, starch, and ultra-processed food. 03/05/2021 Duración: 48minDo You Have Excess Belly Fat? Why It’s A Problem And What You Can Do About It | This episode is sponsored by Pique Tea and Thrive Market You might be surprised to learn that not all body fat is created equal; where the fat is on your body makes a big difference when it comes to your overall health. The fat inside your belly is called “VAT” or visceral adipose tissue and this type of fat is particularly dangerous. When you begin to put on weight, especially this lethal belly fat, your biology shifts out of balance, veering into the unstable and unhealthy territory of disease—which in turn often leads to more weight gain. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to explain how belly fat contributes to other health issues. They also discuss the numerous factors that contribute to belly fat, including but not limited to diet, and how they work with patients to eliminate excess visceral fat. Being an informed and engaged consumer is one of the most powerful ways to turn around our toxic world, and we have some incredible resources at our fingertips to do that, like the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Today, I’m excited to talk with Ken Cook from the EWG about food, conscious consumerism, and our impact on the planet. Ken Cook is the president and co-founder of the EWG. 21/04/2021 Duración: 01h13minIs Alzheimer’s Reversible? Getting to the Root Causes | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and TrueDark Alzheimer’s doesn’t just happen overnight; it’s the severe end of a spectrum, that comes after decades of changes have already been occurring in the brain. So why is it that we’ve grown accustomed to dreading this diagnosis, instead of doing what we can to proactively stop it in its tracks? For one, we’ve long been told that once the brain starts downsizing we can’t reverse the process. Now, we know that’s not the case. It’s possible to avoid brain degradation and actually even rebuild it. Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy has been a pioneering detective for Alzheimer’s and other neurological issues. 19/04/2021 Duración: 46minYour Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing | This episode is sponsored by Sound and Tushy Conventional medicine approaches illness as a name it, blame it, and tame it game. But these labels or diagnoses are just names we associate with a collection of symptoms. They have nothing to do with why you have those symptoms—with the root causes of the “disease.” Conversely, just because your standard lab panel comes back normal does not always mean you are experiencing optimum health. In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about how Functional Medicine seeks to get to the root cause of health issues. They dive into the world of unconventional and advanced lab testing that they use to identify dysfunction in the body and optimize health. This high-fat, low-carb approach to eating has become extremely popular in recent years for helping with everything from weight loss to cognition. So is it worth the hype? Like any diet, keto is great for some people and not-so-great for others. Genetics, family history, personal health goals, and so many other factors tie into what type of diet will work for an individual. The one-size-fits-all approach to diet has led way too many people down the wrong path. Today, I’m excited to chat with Gary Taubes all about the keto diet, it’s complexities and benefits, and who might want to consider it. Gary is an award-winning science and health journalist, and co-founder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative. He is the author of The Case Against Sugar, Why We Get Fat, Good Calories, Bad Calories, and, most recently, The Case for Keto.

Symptoms include rash, hives, and nerve pain. Shingles are caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. 09/04/2021 Duración: 16minIs Your Acne Caused By What You're Eating? | This episode is brought to you by TrueDark The food you eat can have a major influence on the quality of your skin. Yet, conventional medicine primarily deals with acne by lathering potions and lotions on the skin or tackling it with antibiotics or topical steroids. In fact, we spend over a billion dollars on prescriptions and over-the-counter products to cure acne. But eliminating acne is best approached as an inside job. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with his colleagues at The UltraWellness Center about how what we eat can drive acne. How To Tell If Mercury Toxicity Is The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
05/04/2021 Duración: 56minHow To Tell If Mercury Toxicity Is The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Kettle & Fire Changes in environmental mercury levels have been dramatic in recent decades; industrial exposure to mercury is significant and mostly comes from coal-burning and chlor-alkali plants. The more mercury we are exposed to, the more we are likely we are to be toxic. The main ways that humans are exposed to mercury are from contaminated fish and dental amalgams or silver fillings. And while some of us are very good at detoxifying mercury and other toxins, some people have genetic variations (called polymorphisms) that make them more prone to metal toxicity. Mercury can affect nearly all your organs, especially the brain, heart, kidneys, and gut, and many chronic diseases may be caused or worsened by mercury, including neurologic disease, ADHD, autism, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and more. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss how they test f

How Food, Farming, And Health Disparities Are Interconnected
02/04/2021 Duración: 19minHow Food, Farming, And Health Disparities Are Interconnected | This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp Racial and ethnic disparities are sadly alive and well when it comes to health outcomes, land ownership, and how food is grown in the US. White farmers are at an overwhelming advantage when it comes to owning land and they see the greatest benefit from the 97% of the income generated by it. Additionally, lack of access to land and fresh food is a form of oppression that sets communities up for generational illness and strife. These are serious racial and ethnic inequalities happening in our current day and age, but they stem from the long-standing structural discrimination that our agricultural system is rooted in. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman explores these topics with Karen Washington and Leah Penniman. Karen Washington is a farmer, activist, and food advocate. She is the Co-owner and Farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York. In 2010, Karen Co-Founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization
