Well, if you are Elizabeth Stone, adopted on the 4th of July at age 4 from Kutaisi, Georgia, you might know a thing or two about being resilient in the process. In the last year of high school Elizabeth used to compete in track & field and also sometimes run a 25 kilometres (16 mi) race for River Bank Run in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She earned a spot and then competed in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. At the 2006 World Championships she won a gold medal for 4x100 metre medleyand a bronze one for the 100 metres (330 ft) backstroke. In 2008 Paralympics she won a silver medal for another 100 metre backstroke in Beijing, China and on 2010 World Championships she won another gold for 4x100 metre medley which was held at Eindhoven, Netherlands.     Four years ago, Noah Elliott was 16 years old and watching the Paralympic Winter Games on television from the hospital room in St. Louis where he was living while undergoing treatment for osteosarcoma, the most common type of bone cancer found in children and teens.     In October 2003, Ryan Boyle became a victim of traumatic brain injury (TBI). "I was hit and dragged by a pickup truck while riding a Big Wheel trike at a friend’s party. Emergency brain surgery saved my life, but I lost a portion of the back part of my brain. At the age of ten, I had to learn how to breathe, swallow, talk, eat, stand, sit, walk—everything— all over again." Though Dr.'s told him he would be lucky if he were able to write with his hand again, Ryan proved him wrong. Today, Ryan is a super-star Paralympic athlete in the sport of cycling and because of his balance issue he rides a, yes you guessed it, a trike. He did use that hand again to write his own book titled, “When the Lights go Out: A Boy Given a Second Chance."
