In October 2003, Ryan Boyle became a victim of traumatic brain injury (TBI). "I was hit and dragged by a pickup truck while riding a Big Wheel trike at a friend’s party. Emergency brain surgery saved my life, but I lost a portion of the back part of my brain. At the age of ten, I had to learn how to breathe, swallow, talk, eat, stand, sit, walk—everything— all over again." Though Dr.'s told him he would be lucky if he were able to write with his hand again, Ryan proved him wrong. Today, Ryan is a super-star Paralympic athlete in the sport of cycling and because of his balance issue he rides a, yes you guessed it, a trike. He did use that hand again to write his own book titled, “When the Lights go Out: A Boy Given a Second Chance." Each year, (TBI) contribute to a substantial number of deaths and cases of permanent disability.  The severity of a TBI may range from “mild” to “severe”.  Ryan not only is a champion on the trike, he is a champion to those living with this disability.
