Bits Per Second

Welcome to DISCOVERING AMERICA, where the Bit Players' resident Russian mime Vlad tells Jim about his experiences adjusting to American life after growing up in the Soviet Union. Today he talks about his first impressions of the country and why the airport represented his first taste of freedom rather than the hellscape of bureaucracy it represents to us. Vlad performs improv comedy most Friday and Saturday nights with The Bit Players at the Firehouse Theater in Newport, RI. Tickets available at www.bitplayers.net Theme music is by Damien Baby, featuring Bit Player musicians Devon and Chase. Buy their music here: damienbaby.bandcamp.com

This week we watched Jim's suggestion, 2007's crime thriller THE LOOKOUT, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Today on I CAN TEACH HISTORY, History teacher Liz teaches her comedian husband Karl about the Progressive Era, Teddy Roosevelt, ketchup, and Ida Tarbell, as well as muckrakers, who were in many ways the paparazzi of their day. Meanwhile, Karl teaches Liz about the movie with the cars. Karl's I Can Teach History videos are visible on his TikTok @kahlmagnah91. I CAN TEACH HISTORY is a member of the BIT PLAYERS PODCAST NETWORK. The Bit Players perform improv comedy every Friday and Saturday night in Newport, RI. Tickets available at www.bitplayers.net. And also why Pierce Brosnan is really the best James Bond and why Tommy K's is an incredible video store that outlasted expectations. Be forewarned: this episode is sincere and dangerously lacking in the sort of ironic detachment usually guaranteed herein. Listener discretion advised. The Bit Players perform every Friday and Saturday night at 8pm at the Firehouse Theater in Newport, RI. Welcome to I CAN TEACH HISTORY, where Liz (an actual US History teacher) and Karl (her husband, an improvisor and comedian, and not a very good History student) discuss a real historical topic on which Karl is the worst student ever. On this prémiéré épisode, Liz and Karl discuss the founding of the Jamestown colony, which Karl learns is not in Rhode Island. Karl's I Can Teach History videos are visible on his TikTok @kahlmagnah91. I CAN TEACH HISTORY is a member of the BIT PLAYERS PODCAST NETWORK. Keep checking this feed for more fun! Jim and Karl decide to revisit SERENITY (2019), already discussed in the Bits Per Second episode #FishMatrix, and they take Chase and Kenney along for the ride. Surprisingly, there's a lot more to unpack, as Karl offers a theory about the villain that he is completely unable to back up and immediately has to rescind, and Kenney chastises the filmmakers for being uninformed on video games. Then Jim leads the gang in a quiz about the real but nonexistent movies that appear in trailers on the DVD. Theme music is Chase Ceglie's "Losing My Mind." Chase's music can be found here: https://chaseceglie.bandcamp.com/ The Bit Players perform every Friday and Saturday at 8pm at the Firehouse Theater in Newport, RI. Today we watched the heartwarming wrestling comedy FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY, starring a pre-Swedish-death-cult Florence Pugh as the WWE Diva wrestler Paige. After a bit we segue into a side discussion of THE WRONG MISSY, an Adam Sandler production that is way better than it needed to be. FIGHTING is available on Prime and Hulu, MISSY is on Netflix. This week Jarrod, Jim, and Karl watched BERNIE, the 2011 film based on a true murder, starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Baker Dill himself Matthew McConaughey. We discuss predatory funeral directors, intra-Texas rivalries, and the presence of iPhones in a movie that takes place in the '90s. The movie is available on Prime, and also for free on Tubi, YouTube, Pluto, PopcornFlix, Crackle, Roku Channel, and I'm pretty sure some UHF channels. Jarrod, Jim, and Karl all watched SERENITY, the 2019 film starring Matthew McConaughey in full Lincoln Continental mode as a fisherman who's given an offer he can and should refuse. BUT THERE'S MORE TO IT THAN THAT. 2/3 of us loved this movie and the other one is Jarrod. The movie is available on Prime.
