  • Ep 123. Eric Langlois: Raising a New Generation of Circus Artists

    16/09/2017 Duración: 40min

Eric Langlois is the Executive Director at the National Circus School in Montreal, Quebec.  The National Circus School (NCS) is a school for higher education in the arts and offers curriculum in music, dance and theatre.  NCS also offers academic subjects at the secondary and college levels. Eric told us that NCS is training more entrepreneurs, not just artists. Students who graduate from the NCS need to perform a final act, created on their own, in front of a public audience. Eric believes that as an educator, he needs to help facilitate artistic talents and innovation. It's an iterative process. NCS constantly reflects on how they can better support the students, and further develop the right attitude and the ability for students to see.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

    01/09/2017 Duración: 41min

Today on the show, we have a fearless woman name Jennifer Dziura, who is the founder of GetBullish.com and the annual Bullish Conference. When I Google "bullish girl" just to make sure that it doesn't sound offensive, Jen's website, GetBullish.com ranked #2 (Good job Jen!), and number one is Wall Street Crowds Bullish on "Fearless Girl" Statue.  "Bullish is feminism- and justice-minded work talk from someone who believes in examining our relationship to corporations."  Here are some of Jennifer's beliefs and a cheatsheet to our conversation:  You can make money and influence the world without being a jerk. Starting businesses on zero dollars Selling expensive things to rich people, and doing real things in the world rather than trying to “manifest your dreams.” Helping other women --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

Previously on Feisworld, I interviewed another classmate named Gustavo Serafini on the show, and the episode was very well received.  In this episode, we talk about both of our experiences, as students at altMBA, and Angela as a coach. Angela and I met up in NYC not long ago and exchanged a few stories of our lives you are going to hear again on the show, including my new diet called Whole30 (Angela first introduced me to Whole30 and it has worked wonders on my body and mind.). For millennials who are listening to this episode, this is an opportunity to rethink what's possible. Angela is someone many of you can relate to. What have learned from this conversation? This episode of part of a Mini Series called the Freelancer's Starter Kit.  Visit our blog for this episode to access additional tools and resources: https://www.feisworld.com/freelance/health-insurance-for-freelancers ---------- Health insurance is often the number one concern for people who are considering freelancing on a full-time basis.  How much does health insurance cost? Where and how do I get it? What if I have a family?  Traditionally, health insurance is something that your full time employer sets up for you and helps pay part of the premium. It can be convenient and hassle-free. Like most people, you probably never even had to think about health insurance before freelancing. Contrary to common belief, health insurance is much more accessible than you think. You just need to know where to look.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

UTEC was also highlighted in the National Institute of Justice's 2016 environmental scan of agencies working with justice-involved young adults.  What is a Streetworker? What does Jonathan do at UTEC?  Street Outreach and Gang Peacemaking* ensure that Streetworkers meet young people "where they're at" and serve as the starting point of UTEC's program model.  Streetworkers target those young people who are most disengaged and deeply involved in local youth gang networks. This recruitment and relationship-building work sets the stage for Streetworkers to conduct UTEC's gang peacemaking work and to bring disconnected youth through the doors.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

  • Ep 105. Anny Laplante: Flying with Style to a New Creation in Circus 1903

    04/04/2017 Duración: 54min

This week on Feisworld, we are joined by a lovely young lady named Anny Laplante. Anny is a "flyer" currently performing with Circus 1903 in a breathtaking act called Russian Cradle Duo.  Russian Cradle Duo is a famously known circus act, where the aerialist being propelled is referred to as a "flyer" (that's Anny), while the one doing the tossing and catching is referred to as a "carrier" (or "catcher"). The flyer usually starts and ends by standing on the frame above the catcher. The flyer then swings holding on to the catcher’s hands, performs releases at the top of the swing, and is re-caught in mid-air.  There are many technical aspects in terms of the strength and speed required for the tossing and throwing to be possible. Needless to say that this act is very challenging and dangerous.  I was covered with tears when I first watched Anny perform in one of my favorite Cirque du Soleil show called KURIOS. I cried again the second and third time. Anny's act felt vulnerable, pure, and brave. In our convers

  • Ep 104. David Williamson: Ringmaster of Circus 1903, Close-up Magician, Applied Psychologist

    26/03/2017 Duración: 56min

David is currently touring in the US in a circus called Circus 1903,  a brand new show from the producers of The Illusionists and the puppeteers of War Horse. It's a fun celebration of the golden age of circus. Their most recent stop was in Boston, MA. (Feisworld HQ!) I fell in love with David's performance instantly. The audience was naturally and completely captivated by his words, his humor, and his incredible talent of improvising with children ages 5-9 on stage. To my surprise, David isn't a trained ringmaster, but a professional magician. He has been featured on ABC's Champions of Magic, where he appeared with Princess Stephanie as he performed his miracles at different locations in and around Monaco. Working as a magician is a career very few people can pull off. How did David become a magician and sustain a career for decades? What are the words of wisdom he'd like to pass onto our younger generation?  David is going to unveil the world of magic to you, and the life of performing with a Circus.   Che
