I first got involved with Surfers Against Sewage way back in 1991, the year after it was formed. I was passionate about the nature, the environment and surfing so the organisation resonated loudly with me in its mission to stop sewage disposal in our seas. Emily Penn has organized the largest ever community-led waste cleanup from a tiny Tongan island, trawled for micro plastics on a voyage through the Arctic Northwest Passage, rounded the planet on the record-breaking biofueled boat Earthrace, and worked on a sailing cargo ship trading western supplies for coconuts. Emily splits her time between running eXXpedition - a series of all female voyages which focus on the relationship between plastics, toxics, and female health - and working to solve the ocean plastics issue with Parley for the Oceans and other corporate clients. Rick Carter is a production designer and art director. He is known for his work in Forrest Gump, Amistad, A.I. Cast Away, War of the Worlds, What Lies Beneath, Jurassic Park, Avatar, and Back to the Future Part II and Part III. Many of the films that he has worked on are directed by Steven Spielberg or Robert Zemeckis. Ernie Child is a Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue Swimmer. There are many reasons why improv theater has taken root in Santa Cruz and become a bona fide artistic tradition. Two of those reasons are named Clifford Henderson and Dixie Cox. Clifford Henderson and Dixie Cox, founders of the FUN INSTITUTE, have a combined total of over 48 years experience teaching improv, acting, and team-building skills. Justin Davis has worked as a paramedic/firefighter at Station 14 in San Jose since 2007. From 1999-2006 he worked for Cal Fire and was part of the Helitack crew from 2005-2006. He has also been part of the Urban Search And Rescue Team (USAR) for the past seven years. Additionally, he is part of the Santa Cruz Marine Rescue Team.
