  • Shirt King Phade - A Pioneer in Streetwear and Hip Hop Fashion

    10/09/2018 Duración: 49min

Today’s episode is very, very special to me. Today’s guest on the show is Phade of the Mighty Shirt Kings. If you’ve a been a long time listener, then you’ve heard me speak about Phade and the Shirt Kings about a dozen or so times in previous episodes. Before I even knew I was a creative or before I was into art like that, I was into the the work of Phade. If you’re not familiar with Phade or the Shirt Kings, you are, you just don’t know you are. Whenever you see any airbrushed Disney or popular cartoon character drenched in hip hop culture on a shirt, you’re seeing the influence of Phade and the Mighty Mighty Shirt Kings. If you’ve ever seen LL Cool J, Biz Markie, Bell Biv Devoe, Pusha T or anyone from the ASAP Mob rocking airbrushed anything, I’m certain it was done by Phade or one of the many members of the Shirt Kings crew. Phade and I recorded this in Harlem, right there in Marcus Garvey park. There will be birds chirping, cars honking and probably some sirens but that’s New York Said. I’m out of here, e

    16/08/2018 Duración: 50min

Today’s guest on the show is Tiger Hood also known as Patrick Barr. This episode happened because my train decided to take a detour and out of my utter frustration I decided to get out and just walk home. If you’ve ever ridden the Subway in New York on the weekend then you full understand my frustration. On this summer hike to the Lower East Side I ran into my friend Tiger Hood. Now I’ve known Tiger for some years now. If you don’t know Tiger Hood, he is famous for his photography and the type of golf he likes to play. His game is street golf. Tiger upcycles used milk containers by wrapping them with tape and hitting them with a golf club toward a box in the distance. Sometimes he puts the box up the block and sometimes it’s across the street, it all just depends what he deems the safest placement for that street. Some People even collect his taped up milk containers. The first time I saw his photography it stopped me in my tracks. He had taken a photo in Key West of a Rooster eating out of a KFC box and I th

  • Ambient New York - Staten Island Ferry

    17/07/2018 Duración: 45min

Today’s episode is not an interview. Today’s is a preview. It’s preview to a series that I’m working on called Sounds of the City. I literally walk around the city with a documentary microphone capturing the pulse, the heartbeat, the music, the voices, the sounds and sirens of a particular area in New York. Today we'll be listening to the Staten Island Ferry. I’ve been taking the ferry as far back as I can remember. I can remember as a kid, I always wanted to order something from the snack bar on the boat. My mom was always like “Nah, save your money...” I’m 40 years old and I still haven’t done it! I promise you next time of I’m on the ferry I’m getting a soft pretzel or a beer or both. It’s one thing to commute on the ferry and it’s a whole other type of experience if you just stop and listen. I walked all around the boat with the microphone for an enhanced experience. Show Notes: https://www.newyorksaid.com/staten-island-ferry/

I laughed a lot, had a ton of nostalgic moments plus I learn a ton of stuff about Bob that I did not know. After the film, Bob and I kicked it for a few but he was gracious to give us access to record the Q&A after the movie. // Show Notes: https://www.newyorksaid.com/bobbito-garcia/
