In his Message, the President recalled the origins of St. Brigid’s Feast Day, highlighting the influence that St. Brigid has had on Irish society, and noting that her examples as a strong female voice in a male dominated world can inspire us also in present times. The President noted that, as we celebrate the courage and commitment of St. Brigid in her day, we in our day pay tribute to all of those who continue to put their lives at risk as they continue their important work, for the benefit of all of us their fellow citizens. As St. Brigid’s Day traditionally marks the beginning of Spring, the President expressed his hope that this Spring will bring the end of the long “winter of the Covid pandemic.”

As a gesture to all those who have died, or who have lost a loved-one during the past year, President Higgins and Sabina invited Dan McCabe to perform ‘The Parting Glass’ at Áras an Uachtaráin, to remember the year that was, and to bring 2020 to a close with a thought for them all. The performance is part of the President’s ‘Samhlaíocht agus An Náisiún / Imagination and the Nation’ initiative, which highlights the powerful and transformative role of art and creativity in society.

President Higgins addressed a special “Winter Celebration” hosted by the Ireland Funds. The Ireland Funds is an organisation harnessing the power of a global philanthropic network of friends of Ireland, to promote and support peace, culture, education and community development across the island of Ireland and among Irish communities around the world. In his address, the President paid tribute to the organisation and its network of donors and supporters for remaining true to its mission, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.
