  • 232. The Motion City Soundtrack Draft

    16/07/2021 Duración: 01h04min

In anticipation of My Che—, err, Motion City Soundtrack’s upcoming 17 years of Commit This To Memory Tour, we draft our favorite MCS songs that were released between the years 2000-2010. What we were left with was a great playlist that you can stream on Apple Music and Spotify, but more importantly an even deeper understanding of how incredibly awesome and underrated this band is.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: The Motion City Soundtrack Draft Playlist on Apple Music The Motion City Soundtrack Draft Playlist on Spotify Purenoise Lo-Fi Album   Songs of the week: Sexting by Bo Burnham Clairvoyant (Lo-Fi version) by The Story So Far / MIK   Hit us up online! • 231. Miss Murder by AFI

    09/07/2021 Duración: 01h01min

The goth fever dream that is the music video for AFI’s Miss Murder gets a solid breakdown in this week’s episode. There’s rabbits. pieces of paper, super long bangs, “the masses”, more bangs, more rabbits, a castle, and a whole freakin other song! There’s both a ton to talk about, and not much at the same time, so Tom offers an AnECdoTe about the time he had a rabbit for like a minute.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: Miss Murder Music Video Team Chronos on Battlebots Fake Marshall amps on stage Saosin talking about fake amps backstage   Songs of the week: Splash (feat. • 230. The Kill (Bury Me) by 30 Seconds to Mars

    02/07/2021 Duración: 54min

30 Seconds to Mars isn’t a band we typically think of when we go back to the emo well, but after seeing the music video for The Kill (Bury Me), it all makes sense. There’s movie references, creepy dudes in Tuxedos, women dripping in blood, gorilla suits, and eyeliner. Oh man, is there eyeliner. While this isn’t a video you go to if you want to enjoy the song, the band really goes to great lengths to pay homage to a classic film and build a compelling story that may fail to tie up some loose ends at points, but ultimately delivers a very pleasant 4.5 minutes of visuals to accompany a very great song.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: The Kill (Bury Me) Music Video felt emo again might delete video feat. • 229. The AIM Away Message Lyrics Draft

    25/06/2021 Duración: 01h14min

The year is 2003, you and your best friend just walked home from your first day of 7th grade, there’s Capri Sun in the fridge, bagel bites in the freezer, and a new episode of Teen Girl Squad on homestarrrunner.com. You boot up the Gateway in the computer room and listen to the sweet sweet noise of calling the internet through copper wire. After what feels like an eternity, you’re in. You hear the familiar sounds of a creaky door opening, your friends list loads, and all of your loved ones are in one place, at the click of a button, on AOL Instant Messenger. But the bagel bites are still warm and we still need to find out where the frick Thomas the alien came from, so we throw on an away message… but there are so many options. So many cool songs. What do we want our away message to say about us? What do we want our away message to say to others? To “the one”…. We draft those picks in this week’s episode.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: The AIM Lyric Draft Playlist on Apple Music The AIM Lyric

  • 228. Shane Drake Talks Directing Music Videos for Paramore, Panic! at the Disco, and Fall Out Boy

    18/06/2021 Duración: 01h31min

Shane Drake, legendary music video director for emo acts such as Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Hawthorne Heights, The Rocket Summer, and Forever the Sickest Kids stops by to answer all of our burning questions about what it was like to be on set with some of our biggest heroes. We are honestly stunned this interview even happened, and we’re more shocked at the level of intimate detail he provided for each music video we talked about. There are tons of behind-the-scenes looks at everything from early 2000's screams acts like Underøath, all the way up to directing music videos for American Idol, and his transition into the country scene. Tons of great detail that you won’t be able to find anywhere else, and I’m just not sure what life we’re living right now because this is undoubtedly the coolest thing to ever happen on the show.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!     Check out Shane Drake’s work below: SAY SO PICTURES Rising Star on Amazon Prime   Shane’s Music Videos Mentioned: Pressure by

  • 227. Buried a Lie by Sense Fail

    11/06/2021 Duración: 54min

“In Ancient Chinese philosophy, yin and yang is a concept of dualism, describing how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another.” (source: Wikipedia, obviously) There may be no other dualism like the song for Buried a Lie and the music video for Buried a Lie. The lyrics are intense, the stakes are high, and there’s been a murder. The music video on the other hand, while on paper follows the song to a T, reflects a kind of Scooby-Doo, daytime soap opera fever dream of sorts that is very entertaining to watch. “The relationship between yin and yang is often described in terms of sunlight playing over a mountain and a valley.” If this video is the sun, the song is a valley of despair, but damn do they make one handsome mountain scene or whatever.     Links: Buried a Lie Music Video   Songs of the week: Kno U by Origami Angel Bitter by Chunk! • 226. Melrose Diner by The Wonder Years

    04/06/2021 Duración: 01h38s

When The Upsides dropped in 2010, Tom and Pat’s world changed forever. Many nights were spent at terrible diners, across from a smoker’s section that did absolutely nothing to block smoke from traveling through the open air right into our scrambled eggs, talking about a pop punk band from South Philly and how it can’t possibly get any better than this. We dive into the music video for Melrose Diner and break down every scene of this glorious reel of film that features the crazy talented and super hilarious Charlie Sexton.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: Melrose Diner Music Video “The Melrose” MTV Is Over, If You Want It by We Are the Union Living Room Song Acoustic Live Video The Upsides Episode   Songs of the week: Bring Me Down by We Sere Sharks Phone’s Dead by Stage Moms Hidden Colors by Broadside     Hit us up online! • 225. Honestly by Cartel

    28/05/2021 Duración: 01h05min

A few years back we said something regrettable about Cartel, so this week we try and set the record straight. Cartel is straight up one of the greatest bands alive, and everyone, including ourselves, has slept on them for way too long. From the sensible jeans to the dope riffs, the backwards drum sets to the final chorus (but slower), Cartel slays and we don’t give a freakin heck what your mom says. • 224. Starstrukk by 3OH!3 (feat. Katy Perry)

    21/05/2021 Duración: 38min

Things in the scene started to take a turn around 2007. Punk went crunk, and for a while, there was no stopping it. However, some bands tried to ride the line between the two, and we think that no one did it better than 3OH!3. That’s not to say we enjoy 3OH!3, but they at least made the biggest waves. Resting somewhere between Attack! Attack! and Brokencyde, 3OH!3 made a space for themselves on the Warped Tour stage where they allegedly met and became close friends with Katy Perry of all people. The 3 of them teamed up in the music video for “Starstrukk” and things got wet.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: Starstrukk by 3OH!3 Music Video Behind the Scenes Video of Starstrukk Katy Perry performing I Kissed a Girl at Warped Tour 2008 When In Rome, Trailer   Songs of the week: 20/20 by Knuckle Puck Echoing by Kings of Leon   Hit us up online! • 223. Pressure by Paramore

    14/05/2021 Duración: 54min

2005 was possibly the best year ever for emo music. It certainly was the best year for Fueled by Ramen, as their roster graced us with several masterpieces like All We Know Is Falling. Pressure will remain one of the angstiest, most soul crushing songs in Paramore’s catalog, and even as grown men, it slays our souls. This week we cover the music video, Tom’s 2007 Warped Tour experience, long nights alone in your mom’s basement, bad jobs, and quitting bad jobs.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: Pressure Music Video The All We Know Is Falling Episode Shane Drake Quitting a Job with a Barbershop Quartet What by Bo Burnham on Netflix   Songs of the week: We’re Good by Dua Lipa Love Story (Taylor’s Version) by Taylor Swift   Hit us up online! • 222. Who I Am Hates Who I've Been by Relient K

    07/05/2021 Duración: 48min

We at Reminiscent find that Relient K is often overlooked when discussing greatest acts in the genre from the early 2000s, so we are here once again to give them the praise they deserve. Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been is an absolute banger of a song that is buried DEEP into Mmhmm at track 10 (or is it 11?), which hints at a level of confidence, as if Relient K knew that album was so good that folks would stick around to the end to hear the best track from the 2004 release. Not only is the song great, the music video is insanity, serving as a trailer to the greatest movie never made. We spent most of this episode trying to figure out the mechanics of the world we are presented with, as week as listing all the ways in which it is and is not like Nickelodeon’s “Clockstoppers”.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been Music Video The Mmhmm Episode Clockstoppers Trailer The Chariot Playing on some kid’s roof   Songs of the week: Breathe by Knuckle Puck feat. • 221. The 2005 Emo Madness Tournament

    30/04/2021 Duración: 01h04min

In a showdown like no other, releases from the year 2005 battle to claim the title of best song of the year. We randomized a 64 competitor bracket and put songs head to head and it was messed up in every single way imaginable. We disagreed many steps along the way, but ultimately we worked together to crown the #1 song released in the year 2005. • 220. All the Small Things by Blink-182

    23/04/2021 Duración: 01h48s

It’s Tom’s birthday, so Pat is throwing him a bone and letting him talk about 1999’s All The Small Things by Blink-182. The biggest song that we’ve talked about to date at 5x platinum, Enema of the State shook the entire earth as well as Tom’s entire life. • 219. Scorchfest 2021: our Twitter followers give their hottest music takes

    16/04/2021 Duración: 01h05s

Over the past few weeks we’ve been receiving a lot of heat on Twitter for *checks notes, having opinions… So we asked you all, what are you hottest takes, what amazing opinions do you have that aren’t commonly agreed with. We then turned the tables and read all your terrible opinions on the show to take the head off ourselves for a minute. ScorchFest 2021 was a ton of fun and we’re super grateful to everyone who wrote in. The range of topics were wild. We hit on Machine Gun Kelly, Blink-182’s discography, Paramore’s Riot!, Scrubs, My Chemical Romance, and The Used, among many other innocent passersby. Let us know if you want ScorchFest to return in 2022. It was honestly a ton of fun. • 218. Mutiny! by Set Your Goals

    09/04/2021 Duración: 47min

15 years ago Set Your Goals unleashed upon the world an absolute banger/battle cry/genuine revolt against the record industry with their breakout song and title track off their first full-length album “Mutiny!’. We talk a lot about bridges on this show, and you’d be hard pressed to find a better one than manifesto perfectly embedded in the middle of this track. It’s a total banger and while we wish Set Your Goals had a longer star studded career (and that one of us boarded the SYG train earlier!), we’re happy they died a hero rather than live long enough to become the blah blah blah, Batman…   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: Mutiny! • 217. The Best Guitar Riffs of all Time Draft

    02/04/2021 Duración: 01h04min

Pop Punk and Emo musicians aren’t necessarily known for their ability to shred their instruments ala Van Halen or Slash, but there are a large handful of songs from the decade that feature absolutely incredible riffs. This week we drafted our favorite riffs from our favorite pop punk and emo bands from the early 2000s and it gets heated IMMEDIATELY. To no one’s surprise, Tom tries to pick a song from the wrong decade and Pat plays some serious head games.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: The Best Riffs of all Time Draft on Apple Music The Best Riffs of all Time Draft on Spotify Thanks to Casey Kuftic and BITER for the intro song! • 216. Baby, You Wouldn't Last a Minute on the Creek by Chiodos

    26/03/2021 Duración: 57min

There was no living creature as foul as Chiodos, and all of their poems were… actually Shakespeare sonnets? Anyways, we’re here talking about Chiodos and there’s a whole lot to say about it. The screaming, the stabbing, the high pitched voices, the breakdowns, and the rumors floating around our high school that their name was pronounced Chiodos and not Chiodos. Get it straight people. On the surface, the music video for Baby, You Wouldn’t Last a Minute on the Creek is kind of nonsense, but after heavily discussing the weird ubiquity of Chiodos among our hip hop friends, we got to the bottom of the meaning of it. • 215. Can't Stand It by Never Shout Never

    19/03/2021 Duración: 57min

With all the metalcore and neon era pop punk that happened in the early 2000’s, it’s easy to forget about the outliers that were actually a much bigger freakin deal than the bands we talk about week after week. One of those outliers (see also: mega successful solo artists) was Christopher Drew of nevershoutnever! Spawning a whole era of straight hair, hands in pockets, cutest cutesy boys, NSN wrote some super catchy songs that made their way into the hearts of many who then repressed the urge sing them at the top of their lungs for fear of being made fun of. Or at least that’s what we felt like at the time. Anyways! We take some time today to sing some praises, as well as discuss the music video which leads to a lot of conversation about the first time we held hands with our first crushes.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: Can’t Stand It Music Video Brooke Surgener on YouTube Tom’s Cute Boy Photo Pose 4 Under Par Promo Pics   Songs of the week: Thirty Something by Eternal Boy Acolyte by Slaught

  • 214. This Ain't a Scene by Fall Out Boy

    12/03/2021 Duración: 01h04min

Hot off the tail of the Dance, Dance music video, This Ain’t a Scene shows a whole different side of the story for Fall Out Boy. The boys experience fame, wealth, tabloids, fake bulges, scandals, and everyone’s dream of trashing a hotel room (except for Tom and Pat, they’re too post-catholic to handle that kind of guilt). But it turns out it kinda sucks? We think that’s the narrative of this 2 part music video? Either way, it’s a super fun ride that the guys break apart piece by piece while indulging in personal stories of nightmares and that one time they “trashed” a DC hotel room.   BONUS EPISODES AND PHOTOS ON PATREON!   Links: This Ain’t a Scene Music Video The Dance, Dance Episode The Dance, Dance Music Video Green Day Playing Outside Pinole Valley High School in 1990 Check out our blog! • 213. Dance, Dance by Fall Out Boy

    05/03/2021 Duración: 52min

In a world where music videos are a dying art, a symbol of past generations, Fall Out Boy has managed to break the mold and put out absolutely incredible videos, see also: high-concept, cinematic masterpieces. Thanks Alan Ferguson! Dance, Dance saw CRAZY numbers across album sales and billboard charts (we’re talking All-American Rejects numbers here, people!), and possibly the greatest feather in this song’s cap is the ‘Jane Eyre’ adaptation performed in the music room by Tom and other member’s of their class. Pat and Tom each talk about Prom-posals as well as deep regrets from their senior year formal. Then Tom tries to say he doesn’t really like this song that much, but we all know he does.
