Sinopsis
This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay!

Wanda's Picks Feature: Kim Nalley's ELLA: The American Dream
30/11/2009 Duración: 01h00sSan Francisco jazz vocalist Kim Nalley stars in the world premiere of her new musical "Ella: The American Dream." Based on new historical findings about Ella Fitzgerald's humble beginnings, this production will have audiences snappin’ their fingers, feeling optimistic and yearning for more with its original music, jazz standards and Lindy Hop dancing. Directed by Elly Lichenstein. The show opens: Dec. 31, 2009 to Jan. 17, 2010. 25/11/2009 Duración: 01h00sSpecial guests are Keith Terry and his dance partner Evie Ladin, who will speak about the "Second Annual International Body Music Festival," December 1-6, 2009. If you have ever gone on an obsessive search of a sound or song whose name and origin you didn’t know, you might relate to Keith Terry, the director of the International Body Music Festival, which returns for its second year to the San Francisco Bay Area early December in multiple Bay Area venues. In fact, Keith's obsession runs so deep that last year he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the first to go to a body musician, someone who makes music purely with their body. This year the Festival director has tracked down human beatboxers, a flamenco duo, a highly rhythmic Cuban a capella group, Peruvian zapateo, and a sound Terry has heard for years and will spotlight. The festival also features Kenny Muhammad, a.k.a. The Human Orchestra, is known for emphasizing complex polyrhythms, non-percussive sounds, and a breathing “wind technique.” The beatbox

John Handy: SFJAZZ 2009 Beacon Awardee
01/11/2009 Duración: 01h30minJohn Handy, a living jazz legend is being honored with the coveted SFJAZZ Beacon Award for Lifetime Achievement, Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 at 7 PM at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. Sunday’s concert, like many of John’s rare appearances is going to be historic just for the personnel SFJAZZ has assembled for this tribute. I thought at one’s tribute the honoree is serenaded, but in this case John is working—there are four bands, the first three will perform first and the second set will be with a newer ensemble. This afternoon when I called I caught him at a good time, but then John is a talker and his memory is phenomenal, so our hour jaunt along the banks of his memory lane ended up being a stroll down his discography as John shared both old and new stories of the past 61 years of his professional career playing Indian music with the great sarodist/composer Ali Akbar Khan and others, along with his sojourn with the great bassist/composer Charles Mingus and Randy Weston, whom he called one of his favorite boss

30/10/2009 Duración: 02h00sCast and crew from the films: "Townbiz," directed by Mario Bobino, and "Everyday Blackman," directed by Carmen Madden. Townbiz has a theatrical release Nov. 10, 6:30 and 10:00 PM at the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland. David Roach, founder, Oakland International Film Festival where these two films debuted during its 8th Annual Season (10/8-14), join us also. You can catch this modern version of a Blaxploitation film tonight at 10 PM. The director and cast will be in the house 11/10. "Townbiz" exploits all the negative stereotypes re: black women, black men, black families. It's all about the sex, drugs and violence, but ultimately it's about a personal vendetta between a gang lord and his errant or dead beat father. The story has an interesting twist. It makes one see how much of the warring that happens is personal, yet the personal becomes bigger and people join the fight who have nothing to gain from the altercation, yet often loose their lives. Think about Bush Sr. and Sadam Hussain and George W Bush's vend
