  • Paralympian Brad Synder and Basketball Coach Delvin Maston Create the New Normal

    12/11/2016 Duración: 01h02min

Bradley "Brad" Snyder is an Amrican swimmer. He swam for the U.S. Naval Academy and then on the 2012 and 2016 summer Paralympic team.  It was one year to the day he lost his vision, due to an improvised explosive device, or IED, while he was serving in Afghanistan. Through the use of sport Brad immersed himself in the familiar. The swimming pool became not only a safe haven but a place where he could and would excel. Among fully blind swimmers, he is the current world record holder for the 100m freestyle events. Brad is now a professional speaker. Delvin Maston was an all around athlete. He made it safely through 47 months in Iraq. When he came back to the United States he became a statistic. Seventy percent of injuries to military personnel happen outside of the war zone.  Delvin was struck by a vehicle. The injuries he sustained caused the amputation of his leg above the knee. However, like Brad, Delvin also returned to the familiar. He used sports as a tool for his rehabilitation. He particpated in the Wa

  • Melissa Stockwell and Kortney Clemons Living with Post Traumatic Growth

    05/11/2016 Duración: 01h01min

The month of November we honor veterans. Many stories are written about injured veterans who struggle to return to a healthy and active lifestyle. I choose on this program to focus not on the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but rather the Post Traumatic Growth Outcome. Kortney Clemons, U.S. Army combat medic went to the aid of a fallen comrade whose Humvee had been blown off a dirt road outside of Baghdad by an insurgent's bomb. He prepared the wounded soldier for helicopter evacuation and soon heard the familiar "chop-chop-chop" as the aircraft approached. Then came the loudest noise he'd ever heard. A second bomb killed three of his fellow medics and blew away Clemons' right leg from above the knee. Melissa Stockwell was on a routine mission when the explosion happened.  She woke up in the Baghdad ER on April 13, 2004, after a roadside bomb shattered her life and after 24 years of having both her legs, she was suddenly missing one.   Both Army veterans would have months of rehabilitation after countless

  • Chasing the Coconut Man

    24/09/2016 Duración: 31min

Many of my family and friends wished me well in Rio, but they also warmed me of staying safe.  The warnings were not just in the United States, the warnings were from friends I knew who lived in other countries.  Even some of the Brazilians gave me warnings. Most of the warnings were not to venture out at night.  Do not go it alone and to know the surroundings. Great advice for any big city. I have to admit, all of the negativity really had me on my toes and on the alert.  I soon found out that the warnings by reporters, at least for me, were not written by people who actually had visited the country. The articles they wrote were all culturally biased and hurt the country during the Ollympic games. I was able to get to some incredible places and meet even more incredible people.  I am looking forward to having a conversation on my experience in Rio and I affectionately entitle this radio segment, “Chasing the Coconut Man.” About the host John Register: Paralympic Silver Medalist | Certified Speaking Pr

  • Professionalism: Excellence is her Standard with Guest Maria Howell

    13/08/2016 Duración: 01h01min

Mere words can only capture the refrain of her awesome talent. Maria Howell is much more. She is the ballad of beauty and elegance. The melodies flowing from the petite vocalist are truly amazing. While casting a spellbinding smile, she mesmerizes her captive audience with incredible harmonies and rhythms. Howell's signature film performance as the choir soloist in the movie The Color Purple was quoted by one critic as being "one of the film's most stirring moments!" Her rendition of "God Is Trying to Tell You Something" was memorable for all who saw it, but the offerings of the all-grown-up Maria are truly unforgettable, eliciting more stirring moments, one after another. Some may be inspired to call her best kept secret, but anyone who leaves an imprint on every medium from radio, stage and television to the Hollywood screen is hardly incognito. Howell's talent has been featured as a nightclub singer "Goldie" and "Seeder" in the Hunger Games, "Catching Fire. I did not know any of this and just heard her
