At every turn in the Christmas event, people were struck with fear—Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds. In each case, they were told, “Fear not,” because, as the angels announced on Christmas night, with Jesus’ coming there is peace on earth. But honestly, this declaration of peace doesn’t ring true to life. History, before and after Jesus’ coming, is inundated with war. Jesus’ own life was scarred by conflict, hatred, and deadly violence. Someone has said, “Peace is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.” So, in what way(s) did Jesus bring peace on earth at Christmas?
