On October 18th, 1968, Robert (Bob) Beamon shattered the  world-long jump record in Mexico City. It remains as one of the most extraordinary sporting feats in Olympic history. He broke the existing record by a margin of 55 cm and his world record stood for almost 23 years until it was broken in 1991 by Mike Powell. Beamon's Olympic record stands to this day.
