On January 7, 2026, Renee Good, a Minneapolis resident, was fatally shot by an ICE officer, drawing widespread public concern and scrutiny over the federal government’s immigration enforcement tactics. Just weeks later, Alex Pretti—a 37-year-old intensive care nurse who worked at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Minneapolis—was shot and killed by border patrol agents during another immigration enforcement action in the city. The deaths of Good and Pretti prompted protests across the Bay Area and condemnation from local Democratic political leaders.
